I’m an author, editor and photographer, and live in Stoke Newington, north London. My latest book is a definitive guide to the most famous maritime disaster in history, published to coincide with the centenary of the sinking in 2012. Over many years as an author, I’ve written fourteen travel, history and music books as sole author, and shared authorship on several more. I’ve also written books for many other publishers, including DK, Fodors, Insight, Berlitz and Inside-Out guides.

Over many years as an author with Rough Guides, I’ve written fifteen travel, history and music books as sole author, and shared authorship on several more.

Berlitz and Inside-Out guides; apps for Sutro Media; and content for websites
such as Telegraph Travel and Cool Places.
As an editor, I’ve been responsible for many titles in the Rough Guides series, including commissioning the original guides to India and the USA, and editing the guides to Elvis, Soul, the Blues, and Conspiracy Theories. I recently edited the new edition of the Rough Guide to Turkey, and I also work for other publishers.
I’m currently editing two new titles: Sounds Like London by Lloyd Bradley, a history of black music in London, for Serpent’s Tail, and Inferno Decoded by Michael Haag, a guide to Dan Brown’s new novel, Inferno, for Profile Books.
My photographs, as seen on the travel pages of this site, have been published in my own titles, and also in magazines, newspapers and other books. Some are available through the DK photo library; for most I own the copyright.
